Back to school: how to save on school supplies

September is approaching, bringing with it one of the heaviest expenses for families: the back-to-school costs. Backpacks, pencil cases, notebooks, textbooks, drawing materials… according to Codacons estimates, in 2025 school expenses may reach over 1,300 euros per student. An increase that affects both school materials, with price rises estimated between +3% and +5%, and textbooks, which according to Istat recorded an average increase of +3.8% compared to 2024.
But how can you save on school materials without giving up quality? Here are some useful tips to face purchases with more awareness.

How to save on school materials: practical tips

  • Buy only what is necessary, at the right time: waiting for teachers’ instructions can help avoid unnecessary purchases. In fact, not all materials are used right away;
  • Prefer second-hand items: books, backpacks, and pencil cases can be bought second-hand, with savings that can reach up to 55%. Social groups, school markets, and specialized bookstores are excellent resources;
  • Consider digital editions: digital books cost up to 35% less, but be careful — a PC or tablet is needed, as well as the teachers’ willingness to accept them;
  • Compare prices: supermarkets and online stores offer discounts of up to 15% on textbooks, sometimes also in the form of shopping vouchers;
  • Avoid trends and choose generic products: items with famous brands or TV characters cost much more. Simple ones are equally functional and cheaper;
  • Organize a group purchase: as with grocery shopping, buying in groups is worthwhile. The cost of multiple packages can be shared, or promotions can be taken advantage of;
  • Check bonuses and public grants: regions and municipalities offer contributions for the purchase of books and school materials. Check institutional websites and those of schools to know the procedures and deadlines;
  • Culture Card and Merit Card (Carta Cultura and Carta del Merito): people of legal age can use these two cards (500 euros each) also for the purchase of school books.

Knowing how to save on school materials can make a difference. Small measures, conscious choices, and a bit of organization help start the school year more serenely, for both students and parents’ finances.
