Financial Education Meets History
A series of events exploring finance through the lens of history
NAPOLEON, THE BANQUE DE FRANCE, AND THE FRENCH FRANC
April 3, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Museum of Saving, via S. Francesco d’Assisi, Turin and online
Did you know that the Banque de France, the French central bank, was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte?
Why would a French general—a man of war and one of history’s greatest strategists—be interested in creating a financial institution?
As we’ve learned from previous meetings in the “Edufin & History” series, there is a strong link between war and money. The Napoleonic wars led to the founding of several banks, just as other were founded to restore national finances in post-war periods.
In this online session—aimed at understanding modern economics through history—we’ll join Giulio Cifarelli, Full Professor at the University of Florence, on a journey through the Napoleonic Empire and 19th-century Europe, to explore how Napoleon reformed France’s financial system and stabilized its economy.
