Little coins, big choices
A hands-on workshop on money, choices, and saving for preschool children
How do you explain to a child that you can’t have everything right away? How do you learn to make choices, wait, and appreciate the things you have?
Big skills are built from an early age through play, experience, and discovery.
“Little Coins, Big Choices” is the new offering from the Museum of Saving, designed for children in their final year of preschool. This engaging, fully in-person workshop introduces some fundamental concepts related to choices, the value of things, and saving in a simple and fun way.
Through play-based activities, opportunities for discussion, and small challenges designed for young children, participants discover that every choice has a value, that resources are not unlimited, and that sometimes setting something aside for later can be a good idea.
With no formulas, numbers, or traditional lectures, the workshop turns seemingly complex topics into a hands-on experience suited to children’s age and closely connected to their everyday lives.
A fun and engaging experience
During the workshop, children will take part in a series of practical and engaging activities. They will have the opportunity to test themselves, make choices, work together with their classmates, and create a small item to take home as a keepsake of the experience.
The activity concludes with a short visit to the Museum of Saving’s fascinating collection of piggy banks, offering children the opportunity to discover different shapes, materials, and curiosities from different periods and places around the world.
Educational objectives
The workshop helps children intuitively and concretely understand that:
- money is used to purchase goods and services;
- resources are not unlimited and require us to make choices;
- saving means setting something aside today to use in the future;
- the value of things does not depend solely on our desire to own them.
